Our Amazing Signing Baby!

I had to get this down in writing so that I will remember how amazing our baby is!

Jack has been signing a lot lately. He is picking up new signs for things so quickly.

He is learning like a sponge! We mostly teach him signs for things that he sees (when we read to him we show him the signs for various objects, animals, etc.) and for things that he needs (i.e., "more" "drink", etc.)

This morning as I was getting ready for work Jack was beginning to get a little fussy. I figured he may be ready for his morning nap (we put him in his crib for an hour or so each morning sometimes he sleeps and sometimes he doesn't). Anyway, he got up on his knees and started stroking downward from his chest to his tummy while looking at me intently. I thought it was strange. It was like he was making this motion to try to tell me something. I had never seen him do this before and it wasn't a sign that I had taught him...so I went about getting ready and just continued to talk to him.
Jack continued to act fussy, whining and stroking his chest/tummy area up and down and looking at me. So I picked him up. He began nuzzling my chest area like he wanted to nurse. (I never nurse him at this time...he usually gets a bottle later after I am at work.) Because he was so fussy, I decided to let him nurse.
Meanwhile Paul comes upstairs and I tell him about Jack stroking his chest/tummy and acting funny and Paul tells me that this is the sign for "hungry" and that he had used this sign with Jack months ago but that he hadn't done it in a long time. He obviously remembered and was trying to tell me he was hungry and I just kept ignoring my smart sweet baby. He is amazing!!!!

"Mama" "Dada" "Nana" & Lots of Signing & Spending Time with Mommy.

Baby Jack turned 10 months old last week. He is now cruising all over the place holding on to furniture or anything that can help him stand/walk.
He is eating all sorts of regular food...and really doesn't care for the baby food as much now. He LOVES applesauce, and apples, spaghetti, Morningstar soy products (chix patties, burgers, hotdogs, etc.), green beans, ice cream (bad, I know), mashed potatoes, olives (???), corn, and anything that we offer him, really.
He says Mama, Dada, & Nana perfectly now...and knows what they mean. He is always calling out for Mama and Nana as those are his newest words (he said Dada first...and used that almost exclusively for a month).

Jack is signing and learning new signs like crazy! He will sign things when he sees them wherever we go (ie., he kept asking Daddy to take him back to see the 'fish" when we were at Walmart the other day).
At 10 months he knows the following signs:

fan

fish

cheerio

duck

flower

doggie

kitty

hat

zebra

tiger

frog

more

drink

eat

light

balloon

horse

He loves to look at books now. He is always pointing to his collection of books asking us in his way to read to him. When you grab one of his books he will crawl over to you and turn around and sit next to you so that he can see the book. Then, when he knows a word (sometimes) he will sign out the thing he sees. (He sometimes mistakes bears for kitties and pigs for dogs...but he is doing pretty darn well for a 10 month old!)
We had some trouble with his teeth. The prescription vitamin that we had been giving him contained iron and was staining his teeth grayish color (it really scared us at first until we realized with a lot of extra scrubbing the gray color came off). So we bought him his own little battery operated child's toothbrush. He was so infatuated whenever Paul or I brushed our teeth with an electric brush. Now he loves to have his teeth brushed and will spend long periods of time just "brushing" his own teeth and playing with the toothbrush (we leave it turned off when he is playing with it).
I took the week of Thanksgiving off and was able to spend 10 entire days with my son. I tried to spend every minute that I could with him....and we really seemed to bond. We took naps together every morning and sometimes in the afternoon. We went shopping together, went to his swimming class, read books, played with his toys, took baths together...it was the best 10 days of my life, I think.

It was during this time together that he learned what "Mama" meant and that he learned a lot of new signs for things. It was heartbreaking to leave for work that Monday after when we should have been reading or getting ready for our morning nap. My heart was breaking...but I am so thankful that we are fortunate enough to be able to have Paul stay home with hi....and that I was lucky enough to have those precious 10 days at home with my perfect angel.
Mommy misses our times together sweet Baby...please don't forget about me while I am at work. Mommy loves you so very much.
